‘Picky Tea’ Dinner Ideas

If you’ve ever found yourself scrolling for dinner ideas and stumbled across the phrase picky tea, you’re definitely not alone. It’s one of those wonderfully British expressions that sparks curiosity… and once you discover it, it tends to become a regular part of your weekly dinner rotation. I’ve been making picky bits dinners for years now, especially during spring and summer, and it’s easily one of my favourite ways to eat.

‘Picky Tea’ Dinner Ideas

What is ‘picky tea’?

Picky tea (sometimes called picky bits dinner) is a casual, mix-and-match style of evening meal made up of lots of small dishes rather than one main course. Think of it as a relaxed spread of nibbles, snacks, and light bites — anything from crisps and dips to cooked items like chicken wings, salads, or pastries.

Despite the name, it’s very much a dinner, not just a snack. The idea is that you build a plate (or several!) from a variety of options, picking at what you fancy. It’s informal, flexible, and perfect for nights when you don’t want to cook a big, structured meal.

Why do people call it ‘picky tea’?

The term comes from the idea of “picking” at different foods rather than sitting down to a traditional plated meal. “Tea” in this context refers to the evening meal — a term commonly used in many parts of the UK. So essentially, picky tea = a dinner where you pick at lots of little bits.

What do you serve for picky bits dinner?

This is probably the most searched question — and the answer is: almost anything. The beauty of picky bits is that there are no strict rules. I usually aim for a balance of:

  • Something fresh (like a salad)
  • Something crispy (the air fryer is perfect for this)
  • Something protein-based (chicken, skewers, etc.)
  • A dip or two

Below are some of my favourite picky bits dinner ideas that I come back to again and again, especially in spring and summer when lighter, shareable food just feels right.

Airfryer Honey BBQ Chicken Wings

No picky bits dinner at my house feels complete without something a little messy. These honey BBQ chicken wings strike the perfect balance between sweet and tangy. The air fryer gets them beautifully crisp before they’re coated in sticky sauce. They’re bold, flavourful, and ideal for sharing — just keep the napkins handy!!

I love tossing Padrón peppers in olive oil and letting the air fryer blister them until they’re soft and slightly charred. The jalapeño and lime dip adds a creamy, zesty kick that lifts the whole dish. For a picky tea spread, they bring a lovely balance of smoky and fresh flavours.

You can’t have a picky tea and not have cocktail sausages in the mix. I like to add a honey mustard dressing to mine, or maybe try this version with cranberry and soy sauce for a little twist.

If you’re wondering what to include in picky tea for kids or picky eaters, this is always a safe bet. I like to serve these air fryer popcorn chicken bites with a couple of dips so everyone can customise their plate. They’re familiar, comforting, and always disappear quickly.

If you’ve ever searched for unique picky bits ideas, this one’s a winner. Crispy tortellini is such a fun addition. Crunchy on the outside, soft and cheesy inside. The pesto mayo adds richness and a burst of herby flavour. It’s a slightly indulgent option that makes the whole spread feel a bit more special.

These chicken satay skewers are unreal. The marinade makes the chicken tender and aromatic, while the peanut sauce adds a creamy, nutty richness. They’re a great way to elevate your picky tea and make it feel a bit more exciting.

It isn’t a picky tea without a bit of bread, and if you are planning to have a picky tea over Summer, air fry some cherry tomatoes and serve it with one of my favourite cheeses – burrata. Absolutely divine.

If you’ve ever wondered what to serve with picky bits to make it more exciting, adding something like gyozas is a great idea. They bring a different texture and flavour profile, with crispy bottoms and juicy fillings. Paired with a simple dipping sauce, they add variety and a bit of a takeaway-style treat to your dinner.

Instead of always gravitating towards chicken nuggets or strips for a picky tea, why not make home made fish fingers? These are so good and super easy to make.

Is picky tea healthy?

Honestly, it depends on what you include. Picky tea can be as healthy or indulgent as you like. I try to strike a balance by including:

  • Fresh veg or salads
  • Lean proteins
  • A couple of treats (because that’s part of the fun)

Using the air fryer helps keep things lighter while still delivering that crispy texture we all love.

Why is picky tea so popular in spring and summer?

For me, picky bits dinners just make sense in the warmer months. In spring and summer, I naturally want lighter, fresher food and less time spent over a hot cooker. Picky tea is perfect because:

  • It’s quick and flexible
  • It doesn’t require a heavy main dish
  • It’s ideal for eating outside or casually
  • It encourages sharing and relaxed dining

It turns dinner into more of an experience, which feels right when the evenings are longer and more social.

How do you make picky bits feel like a proper dinner?

If you’re worried it might feel too snacky, here’s what I do:

  • Include at least one filling protein
  • Add a couple of cooked elements alongside cold items
  • Serve everything together so it feels abundant
  • Use plates and dips to create a “spread” rather than random snacks

It’s all about presentation and balance — once everything’s on the table, it absolutely feels like a complete dinner.

Happy cooking!

Picky tea has become one of my favourite ways to approach dinner, especially in spring and summer. It’s relaxed, versatile, and endlessly customisable. Whether you’re feeding a family, hosting friends, or just want something different midweek, it’s a brilliant option.

The best part is that there are no rules. You can keep it simple with shop-bought bits, go all out with homemade air fryer dishes, or mix the two. However you do it, picky bits dinners are all about enjoying food in a more laid-back, sociable way.

So next time you’re searching for dinner ideas, give picky tea a go — you might find it becomes a regular in your routine too.
