Easy Sharing Food: Recipes for the August Bank Holiday

The August Bank Holiday is the perfect excuse to slow down, get together with family and friends and make the most of the last few weeks of summer. Whether you’re hosting everyone at home, having a few friends round for the afternoon or simply want some easy food to enjoy over the long weekend, these bank holiday recipes are made for sharing.

Easy Sharing Food: Recipes for the August Bank Holiday

August Bank Holiday is here

There’s something about a Bank Holiday weekend that makes food feel a little more relaxed. You don’t necessarily need a formal meal or a table full of courses. Instead, I love putting together a spread of easy dishes that everyone can help themselves to. Think crispy chicken wings, cheesy garlic bread, prawns, halloumi bites and plenty of potatoes for good measure.

And because this is the August Bank Holiday, I’m keeping things firmly in that end-of-summer sweet spot. These are the kind of recipes that work brilliantly if you’re hoping for sunshine and eating outside, but they’re just as easy to make in the kitchen if the typical British weather makes an appearance.

The best part is that most of these recipes are quick, simple and perfect for the air fryer, so you don’t need to spend your entire Bank Holiday in the kitchen. Make a few dishes, put everything in the middle of the table and let everyone dig in.

If you’re feeding a crowd, you can’t go wrong with garlic bread. These air fryer garlic and pizza baguettes take a simple baguette and turn it into something much more exciting. Ideal for putting in the middle of the table and letting everyone tear off a piece. Serve them alongside chicken wings, prawns or a big salad, or simply have them as part of a relaxed grazing spread.

If you want to bring a little bit of summer holiday feeling to your Bank Holiday spread, this air fryer prawn pil pil is a brilliant choice. It’s the kind of recipe that looks impressive when it arrives at the table but is actually really straightforward to make. Put it in the middle of your spread and let everyone grab a piece of bread and dig in.

Burrata is one of my favourite ingredients for easy summer entertaining. If you’re hosting family or friends over the August Bank Holiday, this is the sort of dish you can put in the middle of the table and let everyone help themselves. It works particularly well as part of a bigger spread alongside prawns, garlic bread, chicken and salad.

No Bank Holiday sharing spread would be complete without chicken wings. They’re one of those recipes that are always popular, whether you’re having a BBQ, watching a film with the family or simply putting a few dishes on the table for everyone to pick at. Serve them with dips, sauces and plenty of napkins because they’re definitely a hands-on kind of food.

These air fryer halloumi bites are a great vegetarian option for a Bank Holiday spread and are particularly good when you’re feeding a group with different tastes. They can be served alongside dips, salads, flatbreads or simply enjoyed on their own. If you’re looking for easy August recipes that don’t require loads of preparation, these are definitely worth adding to your list.

Air Fryer Nando's Chicken Skewers

Chicken skewers are another brilliant Bank Holiday option because they’re easy to serve and packed with flavour. These Nando’s-style skewers are inspired by those spicy, smoky flavours that so many of us love, making them ideal for a summer sharing spread. They’re particularly good if you’re planning a BBQ but don’t want to rely completely on the weather.

Air Fryer Potato Salad

Potato salad is a Bank Holiday classic for good reason. It’s an easy side that works with almost everything, from chicken and prawns to burgers and sausages. I love having a potato salad as part of a big sharing spread because it helps bring everything together. You can have something spicy, something cheesy, something meaty and something fresh, then add a big bowl of potatoes and you’ve got a much more complete meal.

If you like your chicken with plenty of flavour, this air fryer buffalo chicken is made for sharing. Crispy chicken coated in a spicy, tangy buffalo-style sauce is the sort of food that tends to disappear quickly once it hits the table. It’s perfect for a relaxed Bank Holiday gathering because you don’t need to serve it as a formal main meal. Put it in a bowl with some dips and sides and let everyone help themselves.

Bacon-Wrapped Prawns

Bacon and prawns might sound like an unusual combination, but they work incredibly well together. The salty, smoky bacon adds plenty of flavour to the prawns and makes them feel like a proper treat. Put them on a platter alongside dips and other small bites, or serve them as part of a more substantial meal with potatoes and salad.

Air Fryer Feta Bites

Feta is another ingredient that works brilliantly in sharing food. These air fryer feta bites are salty, crispy and packed with flavour, making them a great vegetarian addition to your Bank Holiday table. They’re small enough to pick up and eat, which makes them perfect for grazing. You could serve them alongside a selection of dips, olives, tomatoes, breads and other Mediterranean-inspired ingredients for an easy sharing platter.

Sausage rolls are one of those foods that work at practically any occasion, and turning them into bite-sized pieces makes them even better for sharing. They’re easy to pick up, easy to dip and can be served alongside almost anything. If the weather isn’t quite behaving, sausage roll bites are the kind of comfort food that still works perfectly. They’re simple, familiar and always likely to be popular.

How to Put Together the Perfect Bank Holiday Sharing Spread

The great thing about sharing food is that you don’t need to make every single dish. In fact, I’d recommend choosing a few recipes that complement each other and building your spread around them. Start with one or two more substantial dishes,  then add a couple of easy sides, such as the air fryer potato salad and halloumi.

From there, you can add smaller dishes that people can pick at. Chicken wings, feta bites, sausage roll bites and bacon-wrapped prawns all work brilliantly for this. Finally, add something like the garlic and pizza baguettes. They’re perfect for mopping up sauces and making sure nobody leaves hungry. You don’t need everything to be served at exactly the same time either. That’s one of the best things about a Bank Holiday spread. Put out a few dishes, let people graze and bring out more food as you go.

Make the Most of the Air Fryer

If you’re hosting over the August Bank Holiday, the air fryer can be your best friend. It means you don’t have to rely entirely on the oven, and many of these dishes can be cooked in smaller batches. You can also use it to refresh food throughout the day, which is particularly handy if you’re having people over for several hours rather than sitting down for one meal.

The key is not to overload yourself with recipes that all need cooking at the same time. Pick dishes with different cooking times and prepare as much as you can beforehand. For example, you could prepare the chicken skewers, sausage roll bites and prawns earlier in the day, then cook them when you’re ready. The potato salad can be prepared ahead, while the garlic baguettes and halloumi bites can be cooked closer to serving. That way, you’re actually able to enjoy your Bank Holiday rather than spending the whole thing standing in front of the air fryer.

Making the Most of the Last Days of Summer

The August Bank Holiday always feels like a bit of a milestone. There’s still plenty of summer left, but you can also feel the seasons starting to change. The evenings are getting shorter, routines are starting to return and September is just around the corner. That’s exactly why I love making the most of this weekend with food that still feels summery and relaxed. Prawns, halloumi, feta, chicken skewers, potato salad and plenty of garlic bread all work brilliantly for outdoor eating, while the baked potatoes, sausage roll bites and buffalo chicken bring a little more comfort to the table.

You don’t need perfect weather either. If the sun comes out, take everything outside and enjoy it. If it doesn’t, put the kettle on, get everyone round the table and enjoy the same food indoors. After all, the best Bank Holiday recipes are the ones that bring everyone together without creating loads of extra work.

Happy cooking!
