What are tiramisu ice lollies?
Tiramisu ice lollies are a frozen version of the classic Italian dessert. They combine a creamy mascarpone filling with coffee-soaked ladyfingers, coated in crisp dark chocolate and finished with a dusting of cocoa powder for all the flavours of traditional tiramisu in a refreshing frozen treat.
Do tiramisu ice lollies contain coffee?
Yes. This recipe uses espresso or strong brewed coffee to soak the ladyfingers, giving the lollies their classic tiramisu flavour. If you’d prefer a milder taste, you can use decaffeinated coffee.
Can I make tiramisu ice lollies without coffee?
Yes. You can replace the coffee with hot chocolate or a coffee alternative if you’re making them for children or simply don’t enjoy coffee. The flavour will be different but still delicious.
Do tiramisu ice lollies contain alcohol?
No. This recipe is alcohol-free. Traditional tiramisu often includes Marsala wine, rum or coffee liqueur, but these frozen lollies skip the alcohol while keeping all the classic flavours.
Can I add alcohol to tiramisu ice lollies?
Yes. If you’d like a more traditional flavour, you can add a splash of coffee liqueur, Marsala wine or dark rum to the coffee before soaking the ladyfingers. Keep in mind that too much alcohol can prevent the lollies from freezing properly.
What are ladyfingers?
Ladyfingers, also known as sponge fingers, are light, crisp sponge biscuits traditionally used in tiramisu. They soften when dipped in coffee and create the signature layered texture.
Can I use sponge cake instead of ladyfingers?
Yes. If you can’t find ladyfingers, small pieces of plain sponge cake can be used instead. Just avoid soaking them for too long, as they absorb liquid more quickly.
Do I need ice lolly moulds?
Ice lolly moulds make these easier to shape and serve, but if you don’t have any, you can freeze the mixture in small paper cups with wooden lolly sticks.
How long do tiramisu ice lollies take to freeze?
Freeze them for at least 2–3 hours, although leaving them overnight gives the best texture and makes them easier to remove from the moulds.
How long do homemade tiramisu ice lollies last?
Stored in an airtight container or wrapped individually, they’ll keep well in the freezer for up to one month.
Can I use milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate?
Absolutely. Milk chocolate creates a sweeter coating, while dark chocolate balances the richness of the mascarpone with a slight bitterness.
Can I make tiramisu ice lollies without mascarpone?
Mascarpone gives tiramisu its signature creamy texture and flavour. If needed, full-fat cream cheese can be used as an alternative, although the taste will be slightly tangier.
Method
Step 1
To a bowl or jug, add your mascarpone and give that a good mix until smooth then add your cream, milk and vanilla extract. Mix but not too much or else it will go thick.
Step 2
Grab your ice lolly moulds and add a layer of the mascarpone cream to the bottom then break the lady fingers into three and dip into the shot of espresso. Place on top of the cream then add another scoop of the cream and smooth.
Step 3
Set in the freezer for 2-3 hours (ideally overnight).
Step 4
When ready, melt some chocolate then dunk the lollies into the chocolate and set on a lined tray. Top with cocoa powder then freezer for another 10-15 mins.
