Can you make Thai Basil Chicken in a slow cooker?
While traditional Thai Basil Chicken is usually cooked quickly in a hot wok, this slow cooker version creates tender chicken in a rich, sweet and savoury sauce that’s perfect for an easy family dinner.
Is this Slow Cooker Thai Basil Chicken a healthy fakeaway?
Yes. This healthier fakeaway is packed with protein and comes in at 448 calories per serving, including 150g cooked basmati rice. It’s a great alternative to ordering a takeaway.
Can I use chicken breast instead of chicken thighs?
Absolutely. Chicken thighs stay juicier during slow cooking, but diced chicken breast also works well. Just be careful not to overcook it, as breast meat can become drier.
What can I serve with Slow Cooker Thai Basil Chicken?
This recipe is delicious served with basmati rice, jasmine rice, noodles or steamed vegetables. For a lower-carb option, serve it with cauliflower rice.
Is Thai basil the same as regular basil?
No. Thai basil has a slightly spicy, liquorice flavour, while regular basil is sweeter. If you can’t find fresh Thai basil, dried basil or Thai holy basil paste works well in this slow cooker recipe.
Can I meal prep this recipe?
Yes. Slow Cooker Thai Basil Chicken is perfect for meal prep. Store portions in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
Can I freeze Slow Cooker Thai Basil Chicken?
Yes. Allow it to cool completely before freezing in airtight containers. Defrost overnight in the fridge and reheat until piping hot.
How do I thicken the sauce?
Mix one heaped tablespoon of cornflour with one tablespoon of cold water and stir it into the slow cooker during the final 10–15 minutes of cooking.
Can I make this recipe less spicy?
Yes. Simply reduce or leave out the chilli flakes. The recipe will still have plenty of flavour from the garlic, soy sauce, honey and basil.
What’s the best slow cooker setting?
Cook on Low for 6–7 hours or High for 3–4 hours for the most tender chicken and best flavour.
Is this recipe good for batch cooking?
Definitely. This is an ideal slow cooker dinner for batch cooking as it reheats well and is perfect for lunches or busy weeknight dinners.
