Irish Funeral Sandwiches

You always find these sandwiches at an Irish funeral. And in all honesty, they are the best thing about a funeral.

DIFFICULTY

simple

What are Irish funeral sandwiches?

Irish funeral sandwiches are a traditional spread often served after funerals in Ireland. They’re typically made with simple fillings such as chopped egg, ham, mayonnaise and salad cream, served on buttered white bread and cut into neat triangles or fingers. They’re comforting, easy to make and a familiar favourite at family gatherings.

Why are they called Irish funeral sandwiches?

These sandwiches earned their name because they’re commonly served at funeral receptions across Ireland. Alongside tea, cakes and biscuits, freshly made sandwiches are a long-standing part of Irish hospitality, offering guests something simple and comforting after the service.

What are traditional Irish sandwich fillings?

Popular Irish sandwich fillings include egg and onion, egg mayonnaise, ham and egg, chicken stuffing, roast beef, cheddar cheese with onion, corned beef and tomato. They’re usually served on buttered white or wholemeal bread.

Are Irish funeral sandwiches always made with egg?

Egg is one of the most traditional ingredients, but there are many variations. Ham, chicken, cheese, tuna and roast beef are also common fillings found on an Irish funeral sandwich platter.

What’s the difference between egg mayonnaise and egg and onion sandwiches?

Egg mayonnaise sandwiches are made with chopped eggs mixed with mayonnaise. Egg and onion sandwiches usually include finely chopped onion or spring onions for extra flavour. This recipe combines eggs with ham, mayonnaise, salad cream, lettuce and tomato for a heartier twist.

Why use salad cream as well as mayonnaise?

Salad cream adds a tangy flavour that balances the richness of the mayonnaise and eggs. It’s a classic addition to many traditional British and Irish sandwich fillings.

What’s the best bread for Irish funeral sandwiches?

Soft white sliced bread is the traditional choice. Buttering the bread before adding the filling helps prevent it from becoming soggy and adds extra flavour.

Can I make Irish funeral sandwiches ahead of time?

Yes. Prepare the filling in advance and store it in the fridge for up to 2–3 days. Assemble the sandwiches shortly before serving so the bread stays fresh.

How long does the sandwich filling keep?

The egg and ham filling can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2–3 days. Give it a quick stir before using.

Can I make these for parties?

Definitely. Although they’re known as funeral sandwiches, they’re also perfect for buffets, picnics, afternoon tea, lunchboxes and family parties.

Why are Irish funeral sandwiches so popular?

They’re affordable, comforting, easy to prepare in large quantities and made with simple ingredients that most people enjoy. Their nostalgic flavour has made them a staple at Irish family gatherings for generations.
