Air Fryer Granola

I can't believe this is my first time making granola in the air fryer. It's so easy to make, and fully customisable too. I don't think I'll be making it any other way from now on.

Can you make granola in an air fryer?

Yes! An air fryer is one of the quickest and easiest ways to make homemade granola. It cooks faster than the oven, becomes beautifully golden and crunchy, and is ideal for making small batches.

How long does granola take to cook in an air fryer?

Most air fryer granola takes around 15–20 minutes at 170°C. Be sure to shake or stir it halfway through cooking so it browns evenly and doesn’t catch.

Why make granola in an air fryer instead of the oven?

The air fryer heats up quickly, cooks faster than a conventional oven and uses less energy. It’s perfect if you want homemade granola without waiting for the oven to preheat.

What oats are best for air fryer granola?

Rolled oats or jumbo oats work best as they create a chunky, crunchy granola. Avoid instant oats, which can become too soft and won’t give the same texture.

Can I use porridge oats?

Yes. Porridge oats will still work, although rolled or jumbo oats tend to produce a crunchier granola.

Why should I line the air fryer basket?

Greaseproof paper helps prevent smaller ingredients like oats and seeds from falling through the basket while making cleaning much easier. Make sure the paper is weighed down with the granola before starting the air fryer.

Can I customise homemade granola?

Absolutely. One of the best things about homemade granola is how easy it is to adapt. Try adding:

  • Almonds
  • Pecans
  • Walnuts
  • Cashews
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Coconut flakes
  • Chocolate chips
  • Dried apricots
  • Raisins
  • Freeze-dried berries

When should I add dried fruit?

Add dried fruit after the granola has finished cooking. This prevents it from burning or becoming hard in the air fryer.

Can I use maple syrup instead of honey?

Yes. Maple syrup is an excellent alternative and makes the granola suitable for vegans if all the other ingredients are vegan-friendly.

Is homemade granola healthy?

Homemade granola can be a healthier option because you control exactly what goes into it. You can adjust the sweetness, increase the nuts and seeds, and avoid unnecessary additives often found in shop-bought granola.

Is air fryer granola good for meal prep?

Yes. Air fryer granola is ideal for meal prep as it keeps well in an airtight container, making breakfast quick and easy throughout the week.

How long does homemade granola last?

Stored in an airtight container at room temperature, homemade granola stays fresh for around 2–3 weeks.

Can I freeze homemade granola?

Yes. Granola freezes well for up to three months. Allow it to cool completely before freezing in an airtight container or freezer bag.

Why isn’t my granola crunchy?

Granola becomes crisp as it cools. If it still feels soft after cooling, it may need a few extra minutes in the air fryer. Be careful not to overcook it, as the nuts can burn quickly.

Why did my granola burn?

Granola can brown quickly because of the honey or other sweeteners. Stirring halfway through cooking and keeping an eye on it during the final few minutes helps prevent burning.

Can I make nut-free granola?

Yes. Simply replace the nuts with extra seeds such as pumpkin, sunflower or chia seeds for a delicious nut-free version.

Can I make gluten-free granola?

Yes. Use certified gluten-free oats and check that all your other ingredients are gluten-free.

What’s the best way to serve homemade granola?

Air fryer granola is delicious served with:

  • Greek yoghurt
  • Natural yoghurt
  • Berry compote
  • Fresh berries
  • Banana
  • Honey
  • Milk
  • Plant-based yoghurt
  • Smoothie bowls

Can I add chocolate chips?

Yes. Add chocolate chips once the granola has completely cooled so they don’t melt.

What’s the best container for storing granola?

Store cooled granola in an airtight glass jar or sealed container to help it stay crunchy for longer.

Can children eat homemade granola?

Yes. It’s a great family-friendly breakfast or snack. If making it for younger children, chop larger nuts into smaller pieces if needed.

Method

Step 1

Line your air fryer with some greaseproof paper and add your oats, mixed nuts, seeds, honey and cinnamon. Give that a good mix then air fry for 15-20 mins at 170.

Step 2

Shake half way and once cooked add your dried fruit (I use cranberries) then add to an air tight container. I like to serve granola with some Greek yogurt and fruit compot. The perfect breakfast.

Ingredients

250g rolled oats (jumbo is ideal)

50g mixed nuts

50g mixed seeds (I used pumpkin and chia seeds)

2-3 tbsp honey

1 tsp ground cinnamon

50g dried fruit of choice (I used cranberries)

Serve with some Greek yogurt, berry compote and some fresh fruit.
