Mississippi Pot Roast is a beloved Southern-style slow-cooked beef dish that originated in the early 2000s. Created by Robin Chapman in Ripley, Mississippi, it’s a simple yet incredibly flavourful recipe that transforms an ordinary chuck roast (also known as braising steak in the UK and Ireland) into a tender, melt-in-your-mouth meal.
Is This an Authentic American Recipe?
This is a quintessential American recipe, specifically originating from the Southern United States. The dish became a viral sensation after Robin Chapman developed it as a milder version of her aunt’s original recipe8. It quickly spread across American households, becoming a popular “set it and forget it” slow cooker meal that replicates home-style Southern cooking.
Substitutes for Ranch Seasoning:
You can make your own ranch seasoning if you can’t pick up a packet at your local supermarket. All you need to do is mix the following herbs and spices:
- 1 tablespoon dried parsley
- 1 tablespoon dried dill
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons onion powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
Method
Step 1
Place the beef roast in your slow cooker. Then pour the water and pepperoncini juice over the roast and catter the pepperoncini peppers around the beef.
Step 2
Add the ranch seasoming and butter into the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.
Step 3
Once cooked, shred the beef using two forks. If you prefer a thicker gravy, mix 1/2 tbsp cornflour with a little cold water to make a paste. Stir this into the cooking liquid and cook for an additional 10-15 minutes until thickened.
Serve with mashed potatoes and your favourite vegetables and enjoy!
