Air Fryer French Toast Bites

I dread to think just how many times I have made French toast, it’s probably beyond normal, and I’m ok with that.

I do change up the sauce for these – you can just use a chocolate hazelnut spread or even a berry compote instead of the speculoos if you want to take your French toast to a whole new level. What ingredients do I need for air fryer French toast bites?

To make delicious air fryer French toast bites, you’ll need a few simple ingredients:

  • Bread: Choose a sturdy bread like brioche, challah, or even French bread for the best texture.
  • Eggs: Eggs are essential for binding the bread and creating the custard-like coating.
  • Milk: Whole milk is commonly used, but feel free to experiment with alternatives.
  • Cinnamon: This classic spice adds that cosy, comforting French toast flavour.
  • Vanilla extract: For a hint of sweetness and extra flavour.
  • Sugar: Granulated sugar to sweeten the bites and help create a crispy exterior.
  • Butter (optional): A small amount of melted butter adds richness to the recipe.

Can I make air fryer French toast bites without eggs?

Yes, you can make air fryer French toast bites without eggs. For a vegan or egg-free alternative, simply substitute the eggs with a plant-based egg replacer like flaxseed meal, chia seeds, or unsweetened applesauce. Additionally, try using silken tofu or coconut yogurt for a creamy consistency. Be sure to adjust the liquid ratios and spices to maintain flavor and texture. The air fryer will still produce crispy, golden French toast bites, even without eggs.

Can I use almond milk or oat milk instead of regular milk?

Almond milk and oat milk are great dairy-free substitutes for regular milk in air fryer French toast bites. Both options provide a subtle flavour and creamy texture. Oat milk, in particular, offers a slightly sweeter taste, while almond milk has a lighter, nuttier profile. Be sure to choose unsweetened versions to control the sweetness of the dish.

How do I prevent French toast bites from sticking to the air fryer basket?

To prevent your air fryer French toast bites from sticking, follow these simple tips:

  • Use a non-stick cooking spray or a small amount of oil to coat the air fryer basket before adding the bites.
  • Consider using parchment paper with perforations to allow airflow while preventing sticking.
  • Place the French toast bites in a single layer to ensure they cook evenly and don’t stick together.
  • Gently flip the bites halfway through the cooking time for even crispiness.

Are air fryer French toast bites gluten-free?

Yes, air fryer French toast bites can be made gluten-free! Simply swap out regular bread for a gluten-free variety, such as gluten-free sandwich bread or gluten-free brioche. Be sure to check the ingredients on the bread you choose, as some gluten-free breads can be heavier or denser than traditional bread. For added flavor, you can enhance the gluten-free bread with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar. With the right bread, you’ll still get delicious, crispy French toast bites without the gluten.

Method

Step 1

Cut up the sourdough or bread of choice into chunks – you can get rid of the crust if you prefer it softer.

Step 2

Combine the eggs, milk, vanilla and cinnamon. Dip the bread chunks into the mixture to lightly coat, shake off the excess, then spray really well with the low-calorie oil and air-fry at 190°C (375°F) for 6–7 minutes.

Step 3

Once cooked, sprinkle with the sugar.

Step 4

Melt the Biscoff spread in a microwaveable bowl in the microwave for 50–60 seconds, then drizzle over the toast bites.

Ingredients

1 good sourdough loaf or bread of your choice

2 eggs, beaten

200ml (0.8 cups) milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp ground cinnamon

low-calorie oil spray

1 tbsp caster sugar

2 tbsp smooth speculoos spread (I use Biscoff)
