Cinnamon Roll French Toast is the best of both worlds. It combines the delicious flavours of a classic cinnamon roll with a traditional French toast recipe. You get golden, soft bread with warming cinnamon, a lovely sweetness and all those familiar cinnamon roll flavours. It’s a brilliant breakfast or brunch idea when you fancy something a little different.

What bread is best for Cinnamon Roll French Toast?

Thick slices of brioche are a fantastic choice because they’re soft, slightly sweet and soak up the egg mixture beautifully. You can also use thick white bread, challah or another sturdy bread that holds its shape when dipped. I’d avoid very thin slices as they can become soggy when soaked.

Can I use leftover cinnamon rolls to make French toast?

Leftover cinnamon rolls can make a brilliant French toast-style breakfast. Slice them in half or into thick pieces, dip them briefly in your egg mixture and cook until golden. It’s a great way to use up leftover cinnamon rolls and turn them into something completely different.

What is the secret to making the best French toast?

The trick is getting the bread-to-egg mixture ratio right and not soaking the bread for too long. You want the bread to absorb enough of the mixture to become lovely and soft without falling apart. Cooking over a medium heat also helps you get that gorgeous golden outside while making sure the centre is properly cooked.

How do you stop French toast from going soggy?

The key is to use thick slices of bread and avoid leaving them sitting in the egg mixture for too long. Let any excess mixture drip off before adding the bread to your pan. Make sure your pan is hot enough and cook the French toast until golden on both sides. Using bread that’s a day or two old can also help.

Can I make Cinnamon Roll French Toast ahead of time?

You can prepare some of the ingredients ahead of time to make breakfast easier. Mix your egg mixture and prepare any cinnamon sugar or toppings in advance, then store them separately in the fridge. I’d recommend cooking the French toast just before serving so you get that lovely golden outside and soft middle.

What toppings go well with Cinnamon Roll French Toast?

There are loads of delicious options! A drizzle of maple syrup is always a winner, while icing sugar, cream cheese frosting or a simple vanilla glaze will give it even more of that classic cinnamon roll flavour. You could also add fresh berries, sliced banana, chopped pecans or a little extra cinnamon.

Can I make Cinnamon Roll French Toast without brioche?

Of course! Brioche is lovely because of its soft texture and slightly sweet flavour, but it isn’t essential. Thick white bread, challah, sourdough or even leftover cinnamon rolls can work. Just choose something sturdy enough to soak up the egg mixture without falling apart.

Can I make this French toast recipe dairy-free?

Yes, you can make a dairy-free version by using your favourite plant-based milk and dairy-free butter or oil for cooking. Just check any additional toppings, glazes or cinnamon roll ingredients to make sure they’re dairy-free too.

Can I make Cinnamon Roll French Toast in the oven?

If you’re making a larger batch for brunch, baking can be a convenient option. Arrange your prepared bread in a suitable baking dish, add the egg mixture according to your recipe and bake until golden and cooked through. Keep an eye on it towards the end to avoid overcooking.

What makes this a good brunch recipe?

It’s easy to prepare, feels a little bit special and tastes like you’ve spent much longer making it than you actually have. The cinnamon roll flavours make it a real crowd-pleaser, and you can serve it with all sorts of toppings. It’s ideal for weekend brunch, Mother’s Day, birthdays or simply when you want to make breakfast a bit more exciting.

Method

Step 1

In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, butter and cinnamon until you have a smooth paste.

Step 2

Spread the cinnamon mixture over two slices of brioche, then place the remaining two slices on top to make two sandwiches.

Step 3

In a shallow bowl or plate, whisk together the egg, milk and cinnamon. Dip each brioche sandwich into the mixture, making sure both sides and the edges are well coated.

Step 4

Place the brioche into the air fryer and spray with some low calorie oil spray and air fry at 190°C for 7–8 minutes, until nice and golden.

Step 5

While that is cooking, melt the white chocolate then stir in the light cream cheese until smooth and creamy.

Step 6

Once the French toast is cooked, serve with a dollop of cream cheese and another sprinkle of cinnamon and enjoy.
