Homemade Nutella
I love Nutella, but I'm not a fan of all the palm oil and added sugar in shop-bought versions. This homemade version is really easy to make, tastes fantastic and is especially good spread over some homemade pancakes!
DIFFICULTY
simple
Is homemade Nutella healthier than shop-bought Nutella?
Homemade Nutella can be a healthier alternative to shop-bought chocolate spread, depending on the ingredients you use. Making it yourself means you have complete control over what goes into it. You can use real hazelnuts, good-quality cocoa powder and choose how much sweetener to add. It’s a great way to enjoy a chocolate spread without relying on some of the additional ingredients found in many shop-bought versions.
Does homemade Nutella contain palm oil?
No. One of the best things about making your own Nutella at home is that you can make it completely without palm oil. This recipe uses simple ingredients to create a deliciously creamy chocolate hazelnut spread without needing palm oil or unnecessary additives.
Is homemade Nutella healthy?
Homemade Nutella can be a more wholesome option than many traditional chocolate spreads. Hazelnuts provide healthy unsaturated fats, fibre and vitamin E, while using cocoa powder gives you that lovely rich chocolate flavour. You can also control the amount of added sugar, making it easier to create a chocolate spread that suits your preferences. It’s still a treat, but one made with ingredients you can feel good about choosing.
What ingredients are in homemade Nutella?
The beauty of homemade Nutella is that you only need a handful of ingredients. The main ingredient is hazelnuts, which give the spread its classic nutty flavour and creamy texture. Cocoa powder adds the chocolate flavour, while your chosen sweetener and any additional ingredients help bring everything together. It’s a simple way to make a delicious homemade chocolate spread.
How do you make homemade Nutella creamy and smooth?
The secret to a really smooth homemade Nutella is giving your food processor or high-speed blender enough time to work. Blend the roasted hazelnuts until they release their natural oils and turn into a smooth hazelnut butter. This can take several minutes, so be patient and scrape down the sides as needed. Once you add the cocoa and remaining ingredients, blend again until everything is beautifully combined.
Do you need to roast hazelnuts to make homemade Nutella?
I would definitely recommend roasting your hazelnuts first. It helps bring out their natural flavour and gives your homemade chocolate spread that lovely toasted hazelnut taste. Roasting also makes the skins easier to remove, although you don’t need to get every last bit off.
Can you make homemade Nutella without a food processor?
You can, although a powerful blender is usually the best alternative. You’ll need a machine capable of breaking down the hazelnuts into a smooth nut butter. A standard hand blender or small chopper may struggle to achieve the same creamy consistency.
What can I use instead of sugar in homemade Nutella?
You can experiment with different sweeteners depending on your preferences. Maple syrup, honey or a suitable alternative sweetener can all work, although they may change the flavour and consistency slightly. I’d recommend adding a little at a time and tasting as you go until you get the sweetness just right.
Is homemade Nutella dairy-free?
Homemade Nutella can easily be made dairy-free, depending on the ingredients you use. If you want a dairy-free chocolate spread, check that your chocolate or cocoa ingredients and any added milk alternatives are suitable. Always check the labels if you’re catering for someone with a dairy allergy.
Is homemade Nutella vegan?
It can be! Hazelnuts and cocoa powder are naturally plant-based. Simply make sure any sweetener, chocolate or additional ingredients you use are suitable for a vegan diet. It’s a lovely option if you’re looking for a homemade vegan chocolate spread.
How long does homemade Nutella last?
Homemade Nutella doesn’t contain the same preservatives as many shop-bought spreads, so storage is important. Keep it in a clean, airtight jar and follow the storage instructions for your particular recipe. Always use a clean, dry spoon when serving and check for any changes in smell, appearance or texture.
Should homemade Nutella be kept in the fridge?
This depends on the ingredients used. A simple hazelnut and cocoa-based spread may be stored differently from a version containing fresh dairy or other perishable ingredients. Follow the storage guidance for your recipe. Refrigeration can make homemade chocolate spread firmer, so allow it to soften slightly before spreading if needed.
Why has my homemade Nutella gone hard?
Homemade Nutella can firm up because hazelnut oils behave differently at cooler temperatures, particularly if the spread is refrigerated. If it’s too thick, allow it to come towards room temperature and give it a good stir. You can also adjust the consistency when making it by adding a little neutral-flavoured oil, if suitable for your recipe.
What can you eat homemade Nutella with?
There are so many ways to enjoy homemade Nutella! Spread it over toast, crumpets, pancakes or waffles, swirl it through porridge, add it to overnight oats or use it as a dip for strawberries and banana slices. You can even use it as a filling for homemade pastries. Honestly, a spoon straight from the jar is hard to beat!
Can you freeze homemade Nutella?
Freezing homemade Nutella isn’t usually necessary, but it may be possible depending on the ingredients. If you do freeze it, use a suitable airtight freezer-safe container and leave some room for expansion. Defrost in the fridge and stir thoroughly before using, checking that the texture and smell are still as expected.
Can I use homemade Nutella in baking?
Absolutely. Homemade Nutella is brilliant for baking. Use it as a filling for brownies, cookies, cakes and pastries, or swirl it through cake batter before baking. It’s also delicious drizzled over homemade pancakes and desserts. Just bear in mind that homemade versions can have a slightly different consistency from shop-bought chocolate spread.
