I love pigs in blankets. Whilst these of course are a gorgeous festive dish, feel free to make them all year round or swap out the cranberry sauce for some caramelised onion chutney.

What Are Pigs in Blankets?

Pigs in blankets are a beloved British dish consisting of small pork sausages (typically chipolatas), wrapped in streaky bacon. This classic combination is traditionally served during festive occasions, particularly at Christmas dinner, alongside turkey and all the trimmings. Unlike the American version, which often uses pastry, British pigs in blankets focus on the delightful pairing of sausage and bacon. They can be enjoyed as an appetiser, snack, or side dish, making them a versatile addition to any meal.

Why Use an Air Fryer for This Recipe?

Using an air fryer to prepare pigs in blankets offers several benefits. Firstly, air frying cooks the sausages and bacon quickly while achieving a perfectly crispy texture without the need for excessive oil. This method not only reduces fat content but also ensures even cooking, resulting in juicy sausages enveloped in crispy bacon. Additionally, air fryers are energy-efficient and easy to clean, making them a convenient choice for busy cooks. The rapid cooking time means you can enjoy these tasty treats in less than half the time it would take using traditional methods.

Optional Fillings and Variations

You can customise your stuffed pigs in blankets by adding various fillings or using different types of sausages. Consider using:

  • Cheese (such as cheddar or mozzarella) for a gooey centre
  • Chorizo or chicken sausages for a different flavour profile
  • Herbs like thyme or rosemary to enhance the taste

How to Store Leftovers

Refrigeration Tips

If you have any leftovers, allow them to cool completely before storing them. Place the stuffed pigs in blankets in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to three days.

Reheating Instructions

To reheat your leftovers, simply place them back into the air fryer at 180°C (350°F) for about 5 minutes until heated through and crispy again.
