BUY NOWBlog / How To Make An Oven Free Sunday Roast
If you’re anything like me, you probably grew up with the Sunday Roast being the absolute highlight of the week – but also the most stressful. I remember the kitchen being a chaotic zone of steam, five different pots boiling over on the hob, and the oven working overtime while someone frantically tried to time the meat and the potatoes so they’d actually be ready at the same time. At Bored of Lunch, my goal has always been to take that stress and show you a better way.
The Sunday Roast is the meal that brings families together, smells like home, and let’s be honest… usually leaves the cook with a mountain of washing up and a sky-high energy bill.
But what if you could serve up a succulent beef joint, crispy roast potatoes, honey-glazed carrots, and even a full turkey crown without ever touching your main oven?
Before we dive into the recipes, let’s talk logistics. Why bother changing a centuries-old tradition?
A standard electric oven uses roughly 2,000–3,000 watts per hour. An air fryer uses about 1,500, and a slow cooker uses as little as 200. Over a 6-month period, the savings are significant.
The slow cooker is a miracle worker for “tougher” (and cheaper!) cuts of meat, breaking down connective tissue into melt-in-the-mouth perfection. Meanwhile, the air fryer provides the intense, circulating heat needed for that elusive “crunch” on your potatoes.
No more hovering over the oven door. You can head out for a Sunday walk while the slow cooker does the heavy lifting.
When it comes to the centre piece of your Sunday table, I’m all about maximising flavour without the manual labour. For me, the “Showstoppers” aren’t about expensive, prime cuts that require constant basting; they’re about using the slow cooker to transform affordable beef into something so tender it falls apart with a spoon, or using the air fryer to get that golden, professional finish on a turkey crown or a honey-glazed gammon.
By mastering these gadgets, you aren’t just cooking meat – you’re locking in moisture and depth of flavour that a traditional oven often dries out. Whether it’s my six-ingredient pulled beef that preps in minutes or a succulent roast that frees up your entire afternoon, these methods ensure the star of your show is perfect every single time, leaving you more time to actually enjoy your Sunday.

This is the difference between a dry roast and a juicy one. Wrap your beef or turkey in foil and a tea towel for 20 minutes.
Never pour the liquid from your slow cooker down the drain! That is liquid gold for your gravy.
If you pile potatoes on top of each other, they will steam rather than crisp. Give them space to breathe.
Keep it simple. You don’t need a spice cupboard worth 50 jars to make a great meal. Salt, pepper, garlic, onion, a herb, and a stock cube are often all you need.
You can parboil your potatoes and chop your carrots on Saturday night. On Sunday, just “dump and go.”
Transitioning to a Sunday Roast, Simplified isn’t about cutting corners; it’s about cooking smarter. Whether it’s the succulent pull of our six-ingredient beef or the crunch of our air fryer roast potatoes, these recipes prove that you can have a gourmet weekend meal without the gourmet price tag or the stress.
