Why Should You Batch Meal Prep?

Batch meal prep is a game-changer for anyone looking to save time, money, and effort in the kitchen. Whether you’re a busy parent, working professional, or just someone who loves good food without the hassle of daily cooking, batch prepping slow cooker meals can transform your week. Here are some of the benefits of batch prep cooking:

Saves Time

Prepping meals in advance means less time spent cooking and cleaning up during the week. With one dedicated prep session, you can have multiple meals ready to go.

Reduces Food Waste

By planning and portioning your meals ahead of time, you’re more likely to use up ingredients efficiently and avoid waste.

Cut Down on Costs

Buying ingredients in bulk is often more cost-effective, and having pre-prepared meals on hand reduces the need for pricey takeaways or last-minute supermarket trips. Plus, slow cookers are far more energy-efficient than using the oven every night, helping you save both time and money.

Makes Healthy Eating Easier

When you have nutritious meals prepped and portioned, you’re less tempted to opt for unhealthy convenience foods.

Stress-Free Evenings

With meals prepped and ready to pop into the slow cooker, dinner is sorted with minimal effort… just set it and forget it.

Essential Tools for Batch Meal Prep

Slow Cooker

A reliable slow cooker is essential for effortless batch cooking. Trusted brands like Ninja, Swan, and Murphy Richards offer durable models with key features such as a programmable timer and keep-warm function for convenience. Choose the right capacity based on your needs, with larger models ideal for families and batch prep. PS – opt for a glass lid to monitor cooking without losing heat and consider energy efficiency for cost-effective slow cooking.

Freezer Bags & Containers

Invest in high-quality, leak-proof freezer bags and airtight containers to store your prepped meals. Label them with the date and contents for easy access.

Measuring Cups & Spoons

Consistency is key when batch prepping, so having the right measuring tools ensures your meals turn out perfectly every time.

Sharp Knife & Chopping Board

Prepping ingredients in bulk requires a good knife and a sturdy chopping board to make the process easier and safer.

Permanent Markers & Labels

Labelling your freezer bags helps you quickly identify meals and ensures you use them before their best-by date.

How to Prep and Store Slow Cooker Meals

Step 1: Choose Your Recipes

Pick slow cooker-friendly recipes that freeze well. Look for meals with ingredients that hold up well when stored, such as stews, curries, and shredded meats.

Step 2: Pre-Portion Ingredients

Chop vegetables, trim meat, and measure out seasonings before portioning them into freezer bags or containers.

Step 3: Layer Ingredients Correctly

For best results, layer ingredients in this order:

  • Meat (if using raw meat, place it at the bottom for proper cooking)
  • Vegetables (harder vegetables like carrots and potatoes should be added first)
  • Seasonings & Sauces (liquids should go in last to prevent freezer burn)

Step 4: Remove Excess Air

If using freezer bags, squeeze out as much air as possible before sealing. This helps prevent freezer burn and keeps food fresh longer.

Step 5: Label Everything

Clearly label each bag with the meal name, date, and any additional cooking instructions (e.g., “Cook on LOW for 6-8 hours”).

Step 6: Freeze Flat

Lay bags flat in the freezer to save space and make stacking easier. Once frozen, they can be stored upright like files for quick access.

How Long Can You Store Batch Prepped Meals?

Most batch-prepped slow cooker meals last 3-6 months in the freezer. Here’s a general guide:

  • Vegetable-based meals: Up to 3 months
  • Chicken dishes: 3-4 months
  • Beef or lamb meals: 4-6 months
  • Seafood meals: 2-3 months
  • Defrosting and Cooking Prepped Meals

If you are planning to cook these in the slowcooker it is recommended to take your batch prep meal out of the freezer overnight to let it defrost before it goes into the slowcooker.
