Are protein bagels healthy?

Protein bagels made in an air fryer can be a healthy alternative to store-bought bagels. They are high in protein, lower in refined carbs, and can be made with simple ingredients like Greek yogurt and self-rising flour. These easy bagels provide a great balance of protein and fibre, making them a nutritious choice for breakfast or a post-workout snack.

Can you make bagels using only two ingredients?

Two-ingredient bagels are a quick and easy bagel recipe that requires just Greek yogurt and self-rising flour. I like to use egg wash to make them nice and golden, and I like to top with seeds for crunch. You can skip this process if you like but I think using four ingredients gives you the full bagel effect.

How much protein is in homemade protein bagels?

The protein content in homemade protein bagels depends on the ingredients used. If made with Greek yogurt and self-rising flour, each bagel typically contains 10-15g of protein. Adding extra ingredients like protein powder or egg whites can further boost the protein content, making them a great option for a high-protein breakfast or snack.

Are these air fryer bagels low in calories?

Air fryer bagels made with Greek yogurt and self-rising flour are generally lower in calories than traditional bagels. On average, a homemade protein bagel contains around 200 calories, while store-bought bagels can have 250+ calories. Since they require no oil or butter, they are a lighter, healthier bagel option without compromising on taste or texture.

Can you freeze homemade protein bagels?

Homemade protein bagels freeze well and are perfect for meal prep. Once cooled, place them in an airtight bag and freeze for up to 3 months. To enjoy, simply reheat them in the air fryer or toaster for a warm, fresh-baked taste. This makes it easy to have easy bagels ready anytime you need a quick and nutritious meal.

Best toppings for protein bagels

The best toppings for protein bagels depend on your preference. Here are some great options:

  • High-protein toppings: Peanut butter, cottage cheese, smoked salmon, eggs
  • Classic flavours: Cream cheese, butter, jam
  • Savoury options: Avocado, hummus, turkey slices
  • Sweet & healthy: Greek yogurt with honey and berries
  • Pairing your air fryer bagels with protein-rich toppings makes them even more satisfying for breakfast, lunch, or a post-workout snack.

Method

Step 1

To a bowl, add your flour and Greek yoghurt and give it a good mix with a fork (or feel free to use your hands)

Step 2

Roll the dough and shape into a ball then cut into four even pieces. Roll and make a long sausage shape then make a circle, making sure to pinch the edges so they form together.

Step 3

Cover the bagels in egg wash and sprinkle over some seeds. I used everything bagel seasoning but poppy seeds or sesame seeds would work well here.

Step 4

Airfry for 15-16 minutes at 180°C (356°F). Leave to cool then serve with your favourite toppings like cream cheese and salmon, or keep things simple with some butter and jam.

Ingredients

200g self-raising flour

275g 0% fat Greek Yoghurt

1 egg wash

Everything Bagel seasoning (if you don’t have this feel free to use sesame seeds or poppy seeds)
