Common Questions About Slow Cooker Pea and Ham Soup

Can I make pea and ham soup in the slow cooker?

Yes, the slow cooker is ideal for making pea and ham soup. It allows the flavours to develop slowly, resulting in a rich, comforting soup with minimal effort.

How long does pea and ham soup take in the slow cooker?

Pea and ham soup typically takes 6–8 hours on low or 3–4 hours on high in the slow cooker. This gives the ham time to become tender and the split peas to soften fully.

Do I need to soak the split peas before adding them to the slow cooker?

No, soaking is optional. Split peas will cook down well in the slow cooker without soaking, although soaking can reduce cooking time slightly.

Can I use leftover ham for this soup?

Absolutely! Leftover roast ham or a gammon joint works perfectly in this slow cooker soup. Just add it in shredded or chopped.

What cut of ham is best for slow cooker pea and ham soup?

A smoked or unsmoked ham hock or gammon joint is ideal. It adds flavour and tender meat that shreds easily once cooked.

Is pea and ham soup healthy?

Yes, this soup is high in protein and fibre from the peas and ham, and it’s naturally low in fat, making it a hearty and nutritious option.

Can I make this slow cooker soup vegetarian?

Yes! Simply leave out the ham and use vegetable stock. You can add smoked paprika or liquid smoke for a smoky depth of flavour.

Can I freeze pea and ham soup?

Definitely. This soup freezes well. Let it cool completely, portion into containers, and freeze for up to 3 months.

Will the soup thicken in the slow cooker?

Yes, the split peas naturally break down during cooking, giving the soup a thick, creamy texture without needing any cream or flour.

What should I serve with slow cooker pea and ham soup?

Serve with crusty bread, sourdough, or a warm roll to soak up the delicious broth — perfect for a comforting lunch or dinner.

Method

Step 1

Begin by adding all your ingredients to the slow cooker except for the ham. This includes chopped vegetables, broth, any additional seasonings or spices.

Step 2

For a quicker cook time, choose high heat for 3-4 hours. For a longer, more hands-off approach, opt for low heat for 7-8 hours.

Step 3

Throughout the cooking process, periodically check on the soup to ensure it’s cooking evenly and to your desired consistency. Stirring occasionally can help distribute flavours and prevent sticking.

Step 4

Once the initial cooking time is complete, carefully use a blender to puree the soup until smooth. This step helps to create a creamy texture and blend all the flavours together.

Step 5

After blending, stir in the ham. If the ham is in large pieces, you may want to shred or chop it before adding it to the soup. Allow the soup to heat for an additional 10-15 minutes on a low setting. This gives the ham time to warm through and further infuses its flavour into the soup.

Step 6

Once the soup is heated through and seasoned to your liking, it’s ready to serve. Ladle it into bowls and garnish with fresh herbs, a drizzle of cream, or a sprinkle of cheese, if desired.

650g (1 lb 7 oz) bag of frozen peas
