How Long Does It Take to Cook Pulled Pork in a Slow Cooker?
Cooking pulled pork in a slow cooker typically takes 8-10 hours on low heat, or 4-6 hours on high. The key is achieving that perfect tender texture where the meat falls apart effortlessly. A 2kg pork shoulder joint works perfectly, with the low and slow cooking method ensuring maximum flavour and tenderness.
Why Use Coca-Cola for Pulled Pork?
Coca-Cola acts as an incredible tenderising agent for slow cooker pulled pork. The full-fat version creates a delicious sweet and sticky glaze while keeping the pork incredibly moist. The sugar content caramelises during cooking, adding depth to the meat’s flavour profile and ensuring a succulent result that’s packed with flavour.
What Are the Best Seasonings for Slow Cooker Pulled Pork?
Classic pulled pork seasonings include:
- Smoked paprika
- Brown sugar
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Salt and black pepper
- Optional BBQ rub for extra flavour
Can You Overcook Pulled Pork in a Slow Cooker?
While pulled pork is forgiving, cooking too long can dry out the meat. Aim for 8-10 hours on low heat, checking occasionally. The perfect pulled pork should easily shred with two forks but still maintain some moisture.
Pro Tips for Perfect Slow Cooker Pulled Pork
- Choose a fatty cut like pork shoulder or pork butt
- Trim excess fat but leave some for flavour
- Use a mix of spices for depth of flavour
- Let the meat rest before shredding
- Save the cooking liquid for extra moisture when serving
