Can you make pulled ham in the slow cooker?
Absolutely. Slow cooker pulled ham is incredibly easy — just let it cook low and slow until the meat becomes tender and falls apart effortlessly. It’s the perfect base for a comforting potato stew.
How long does pulled ham take in the slow cooker?
Cook on low for 7–8 hours or high for 4–5 hours, depending on the size of the ham joint. Once it’s cooked through and fork-tender, shred it into the stew for amazing flavour.
What kind of ham should I use for pulled ham stew?
A smoked or unsmoked gammon joint works perfectly. You can use unsmoked for a milder flavour or smoked if you prefer a more savoury, punchy taste.
Do I need to soak the gammon before slow cooking?
If using a very salty gammon, you can soak it in water for a few hours or overnight to reduce the saltiness. However, many supermarket joints today don’t need pre-soaking.
What potatoes work best for potato stew in a slow cooker?
Waxy varieties like Charlotte or baby potatoes hold their shape well, while Maris Piper or King Edward will break down slightly and create a thicker, more comforting stew base.
Can I add vegetables to this pulled ham and potato stew?
Yes. Add carrots, leeks, onions, or even cabbage for extra nutrition and heartiness. Toss them in at the start and let them cook down into the broth for more flavour.
Can I make this stew ahead of time?
Definitely. This stew keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days and tastes even better the next day. It’s also freezer-friendly — perfect for batch cooking.
What can I serve with slow cooker pulled ham stew?
Serve it with crusty bread, buttered rolls, or a green side salad. It’s filling enough on its own but pairs beautifully with something fresh or crunchy.
Is this a good winter slow cooker recipe?
Yes, it’s the ultimate cold-weather comfort food. This slow cooker pulled ham and potato stew is warming, hearty, and satisfying — a go-to for meal prepping during winter.
Can I make this recipe more creamy or thick?
If you prefer a creamier finish, stir in a splash of cream, crème fraîche, or a dollop of cream cheese at the end. To thicken, mash a few of the potatoes or add a cornflour slurry.
