What is the best cut for slow cooker lamb?
For me, lamb shoulder is hands down the best cut for slow cooker lamb. It’s well-marbled with fat, which means it becomes incredibly tender and flavourful when cooked low and slow. It’s perfect for a proper melt-in-the-mouth lamb roast.
How long does lamb shoulder take in the slow cooker?
I usually cook lamb shoulder in the slow cooker for 8 hours on low or around 4–5 hours on high. The longer, slower cook gives you that fall-apart texture that makes slow cooker lamb so good.
Should I brown lamb shoulder before slow cooking?
You don’t have to, but I always recommend it if you have time. Browning the lamb shoulder first adds an extra depth of flavour to your lamb roast and really elevates the final dish.
Do I need to add liquid to slow cooker lamb?
Yes, but not too much. Lamb shoulder releases its own juices as it cooks, so I usually just add a small amount of stock or water. You want enough to keep it moist without drowning the meat.
Can you overcook lamb shoulder in a slow cooker?
It’s quite forgiving, which is why I love using lamb shoulder. However, if you leave it too long on high, it can dry out slightly. Cooking low and slow is always the best option for the perfect slow cooker lamb.
Why is my slow cooker lamb tough?
If your slow cooker lamb is tough, it usually just needs more time. Lamb shoulder breaks down as it cooks, so the longer it goes, the more tender it becomes. Patience is key for that perfect lamb roast texture.
Can I cook a lamb roast in a slow cooker?
Yes, and it’s one of my favourite ways to do it. A lamb shoulder works brilliantly as a slow cooker lamb roast, giving you all the flavour of a traditional roast with far less effort.
What herbs go best with lamb shoulder?
I always go for classic flavours like rosemary, garlic, and thyme. They pair perfectly with lamb shoulder and really enhance the richness of the slow cooker lamb.
Do I need to turn lamb shoulder in the slow cooker?
No, there’s no need. One of the best things about slow cooker lamb is that it’s completely hands-off. Just set it and let it do its thing.
How do I know when lamb shoulder is done?
For me, it’s ready when it’s fork-tender and pulls apart easily. That’s when you know your slow cooker lamb has reached that perfect, melt-in-the-mouth stage.
Can I make gravy from slow cooker lamb?
Absolutely. The cooking juices from lamb shoulder are packed with flavour. I usually strain them and thicken into a rich gravy to serve alongside the lamb roast.
How long does slow cooker lamb last in the fridge?
I find slow cooker lamb keeps well for up to 3 days in the fridge when stored in an airtight container. It’s great for leftovers and reheats beautifully.
Can you freeze cooked lamb shoulder?
Yes, and I often do. Just shred the lamb shoulder, let it cool, and freeze in portions for up to 3 months. It’s perfect for quick meals later on.
What should I serve with slow cooker lamb?
This is where a proper lamb roast comes together. I love serving slow cooker lamb with:
- Roast potatoes or mash
- Seasonal veg
- Yorkshire puddings
- And plenty of gravy
It’s comfort food at its best.
Method
Step 1
Place the lamb shoulder into the slow cooker with all the ingredients listed above.Â
Step 2
Cook on LOW for 12 hours until the meat is tender and falling apart.
Step 3
Once cooked, carefully remove the lamb from the slow cooker and allow it to rest.
Step 4
While resting, pour 280ml of the cooking juices into a saucepan. Add 3-4 tablespoons of gravy granules and cook over a medium heat, until the gravy reaches your desired consistency.
Step 5
Serve the lamb with the freshly made gravy, creamy mash and some greens. Enjoy! 🙂
