Chicken Stroganoff is a creamy and comforting dish that features tender pieces of chicken cooked in a rich sauce made with mushrooms, onions, and sour cream. This popular chicken recipe is a variation of the classic beef stroganoff, making it a delightful option for those who prefer poultry. It’s perfect for serving over rice or pasta, making it an ideal choice for a hearty midweek meal.

Where Did Chicken Stroganoff Originate?

The origins of Chicken Stroganoff can be traced back to Russia, where the traditional beef stroganoff was first created in the 19th century. Over time, variations of the recipe emerged, including chicken stroganoff, which became popular in many countries. This dish has evolved to include different ingredients and cooking methods, but its creamy sauce and tender meat remain beloved by many.

Why Cook Chicken Stroganoff in a Slow Cooker?

Cooking Chicken Stroganoff in a slow cooker (crockpot) offers numerous benefits that make it an excellent choice for a midweek meal. The slow cooker / crockpot allows the flavours to develop fully as the ingredients simmer together over several hours, resulting in a rich and satisfying dish. Additionally, using a slow cooker / crockpot means you can prepare your meal in advance and let it cook while you go about your day, making it incredibly convenient for busy weeknights.

How to Thicken the Sauce for Chicken Stroganoff

To thicken the sauce for your Chicken Stroganoff:

  • Mix 1 tablespoon of flour or cornstarch with a little cold water to create a slurry.
  • Stir this mixture into the slow cooker during the last 30 minutes of cooking.
  • Allow it to simmer until the sauce reaches your desired thickness.

What to Pair with Chicken Stroganoff

Chicken Stroganoff pairs wonderfully with:

  • Steamed rice or egg noodles, which soak up the delicious sauce.
  • Mashed potatoes for a comforting twist on this classic dish.
  • A side salad to add freshness and balance to your meal.
