Tortilla wraps can be a great replacement for all sorts of ingredients if you’re trying to reduce calories. Here, I’m using them in place of pastry to make low-fat sausage rolls. This recipe uses low-fat sausages, too, but I promise with the right seasoning you won’t be compromising on taste.
Can you make sausage rolls in an air fryer?
Yes, air fryer sausage rolls are super easy to make and come out beautifully crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside — all without turning on the oven. It’s a perfect quick snack or lunch option.
How do I make sausage rolls healthier in the air fryer?
By swapping traditional puff pastry for low-calorie tortilla wraps and using lean sausages, you can enjoy healthier sausage rolls with fewer calories and less fat — all still bursting with flavour.
How long do sausage rolls take in the air fryer?
Cook your sausage rolls in the air fryer at 180°C (350°F) for 10–12 minutes, flipping halfway through for even crispiness. Cooking times may vary slightly based on your air fryer model.
Do I need to preheat the air fryer?
Yes, preheating your air fryer for 3–5 minutes will help achieve a perfectly golden finish and speed up cooking time.
Can I use puff pastry instead of tortilla wraps?
Absolutely. Tortilla wraps are used here as a lighter alternative, but if you want a more traditional sausage roll, ready-rolled puff pastry works great too — just allow a little more cooking time.
What kind of sausages work best for this recipe?
Use low-fat pork, chicken, or even plant-based sausages. Just make sure they’re flavourful — adding extra seasoning like smoked paprika, garlic powder, or fennel seeds helps boost taste.
Can I freeze these air fryer sausage rolls?
Yes, they freeze well both before and after cooking. Freeze uncooked rolls and cook straight from frozen, adding a few extra minutes in the air fryer. For cooked leftovers, reheat in the air fryer for 5–6 minutes to restore crispiness.

Do I need to use egg wash in the air fryer?
An egg or milk wash brushed over the tortilla or pastry helps give it that golden, crispy finish, but it’s optional. A light spray of oil also helps with browning.
Can I make these sausage rolls gluten-free?
Yes! Just use gluten-free tortillas and sausages — they crisp up beautifully in the air fryer, just like regular versions.
Are these air fryer sausage rolls suitable for kids?
Definitely. They’re a great kid-friendly lunchbox or snack option, especially if you’re looking for a lower-calorie alternative to shop-bought sausage rolls. Method
Step 1
Remove the sausages from their skins, or if you prefer just squish them in a bowl with a fork. Mix in the sage, thyme and rosemary, then season with salt.
Step 2
Spread the mixture onto one large wrap but on one side leave a thumb-sized gap for some egg wash. Form into a long roll, then cut into 8-10 small sausage rolls, depending on how thick you like them.
Step 3
Brush the sausage rolls with beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Step 4
Air-fry at 200°C (390°F) for 11 minutes.
Ingredients
6 low-fat sausages
1 tsp dried sage
1 tsp dried thyme
2 sprigs of rosemary, chopped
1 tortilla wrap
1 egg, beaten
Sesame seeds, for sprinkling
Salt, to taste
