Who doesn’t love salted chilli chicken? It’s a Friday treat for me – and this air fryer recipe feels and tastes like a takeaway but the nutritional values say differently. If you want more of a sauce with this, you could always buy a jar of supermarket curry sauce and heat it through before adding to the chicken.

Can you make salted chilli chicken in the air fryer?

Yes. This air fryer salted chilli chicken recipe is the perfect healthier fakeaway alternative. It gives you the same crispy texture and spicy, salty kick you’d get from your local Chinese takeaway — but with less oil and fewer calories.

Is this air fryer salted chilli chicken recipe healthy?

It’s definitely a lighter version! By using an air fryer instead of deep-frying, you cut down massively on oil, making this a healthier fakeaway option. Plus, it’s high in protein and easy to pair with veg or rice.

How long does salted chilli chicken take in the air fryer?

The chicken usually cooks in 12–15 minutes at 200°C (392°F), depending on your air fryer model. Just toss halfway for even crispiness.

Do I need to marinate the chicken beforehand?

A quick seasoning or marinade helps! Even 10–15 minutes with soy sauce, Chinese five spice, garlic and chilli flakes boosts the flavour, but you can also cook straight away if short on time.

Can I make a sauce to go with this?

Absolutely. For a saucy option, you can add a jar of your favourite supermarket Chinese curry sauce or even a sweet chilli glaze. Just heat it separately and stir through the cooked chicken.

What’s the best cut of chicken to use?

Boneless chicken thighs give you the juiciest result, but chicken breast works well too for a leaner option. Just cut into even pieces for consistent cooking.

Can I add vegetables to the air fryer with the chicken?

You can! Add sliced onions and peppers in the last 5–6 minutes of cooking to keep them crisp. Or fry separately in a pan for more control.

How do I get the chicken crispy in the air fryer?

Pat the chicken dry before seasoning and don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. A light dusting of cornflour or potato starch also helps give that signature crispiness.

Is this recipe gluten-free?

It can be! Just make sure to use gluten-free soy sauce and seasonings. Always check labels on any sauces you add.

Can I reheat leftovers?

Yes – reheat in the air fryer for 4–5 minutes at 180°C to bring back the crispy texture, or microwave if you don’t mind it softer. For more healthy air fryer recipes like this, you can pick up a copy of my airfryer cookbooks Air Fryer 30 Minute Meals and The Healthy Air Fryer Book on Amazon today.

Method

Step 1

Add the egg to a bowl and coat the chicken strips in the egg, shaking off any excess. In another bowl, combine the cornflour, chilli powder, Chinese 5 spice, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Spray with the low calorie oil and air-fry the chicken at 180°C (350°F) for 15 minutes.

Step 2

Once the chicken is cooked, fry the pepper and onion in a pan over a medium heat, then add the crushed garlic, soy sauce, rice wine and chilli flakes.

Step 3

Add the chicken to the pan and stir to combine, cooking until everything is heated through.
