What is Guinness bread?

Guinness bread is a rich, hearty quick bread made using Guinness stout, which gives it a deep malty flavour and dark colour. I love making this Guinness loaf because it’s simple, requires no yeast, and pairs beautifully with both sweet and savoury toppings.

What does Guinness bread taste like?

For me, the magic of Guinness bread is in its flavour — it’s slightly sweet from the treacle, with a subtle bitterness from the Guinness. The result is a beautifully balanced loaf that’s rich, moist, and incredibly moreish without tasting overly “beery”.

Can you taste the Guinness in a Guinness loaf?

You can taste it, but it’s not overpowering. The Guinness adds depth rather than a strong beer flavour. In my Guinness loaf, it works alongside the treacle to create a warm, almost caramel-like richness.

Is Guinness bread alcoholic?

No — the alcohol cooks off during baking. What you’re left with is all that incredible flavour without the alcohol content, making this Guinness bread suitable for the whole family.

Do I need yeast to make Guinness bread?

No, and that’s one of the reasons I love this recipe. This Guinness loaf is a quick bread, so it uses baking soda or self-raising flour instead of yeast. That means no proving time — just mix, bake, and enjoy.

Why use treacle in Guinness bread?

Treacle adds a deep sweetness and richness that pairs perfectly with the Guinness. When I make this Guinness bread, I find the treacle also helps keep the loaf moist and gives it that signature dark colour.

How long does Guinness bread last?

In my experience, Guinness bread keeps well for 2–3 days if stored in an airtight container. It also toasts brilliantly the next day, which is honestly one of my favourite ways to enjoy it.

Can I freeze Guinness bread?

Yes, absolutely. Each loaf serves about 8 people and this recipe makes 2 loaves. I often freeze slices of my Guinness loaf so I can grab them whenever I fancy. Just wrap it well and freeze for up to 3 months, then defrost at room temperature or pop straight into the toaster.

What goes well with Guinness bread?

This is where Guinness bread really shines. I love it with:

  • Butter and a pinch of sea salt
  • Cheese (especially a strong cheddar)
  • Soups and stews
  • Even a bit of jam for a sweet twist

Why is my Guinness bread dense?

Guinness bread is meant to be a bit hearty, but if it’s too dense, it could be from overmixing the batter or using too much flour. When I make my Guinness loaf, I always mix just until combined to keep it light enough while still holding that rustic texture.

Can I make Guinness bread without treacle?

You can, but I wouldn’t recommend skipping it entirely. Treacle is key to the flavour of a proper Guinness loaf. If you’re stuck, you could substitute with molasses or even dark brown sugar, but the taste will change slightly.

Is Guinness bread healthy?

It’s definitely more of a treat than a health food, but it’s far better than many shop-bought breads with additives. When I make this Guinness bread at home, I know exactly what’s going into it — simple, honest ingredients.

Method

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 170°C.

Step 2

Mix all your dry ingredients together in a large bowl.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, combine the melted butter, black treacle, buttermilk and Guinness.

Step 4

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and gently mix (don’t overdo it).

Step 5

Divide into greased loaf tins, sprinkle over some extra oats, and bake for 45 minutes.

Step 6

Let it cool for 20 minutes, slice and enjoy 🙂
