If you’ve ever been to Ireland, youâve probably had a fry-up, complete with soda bread on the side. Soda bread is typically paired with sausage, bacon, and eggs, but why stop there? You can have them with butter, jam or even make them into mini pizzas. Delicious.Â
What is Irish soda bread?
Irish soda bread is a traditional Irish bread made with simple ingredients, including flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk. Unlike yeast breads, it relies on baking soda as a leavening agent, which gives it a unique texture and flavour.
How do you make Irish soda bread?
Making Irish soda bread is straightforward. You typically mix together flour, baking soda, and salt, then add buttermilk to form a dough. The dough is shaped into a round loaf and baked until golden brown. Some recipes may include additional ingredients like sugar or currants for added flavour.
What type of flour do you use for Irish soda bread?
Here in Ireland, we have soda bread flour which is super handy. However, if you live in mainland UK or even further afield you can make this recipe by swapping out the soda bread flour I used with 375g plain flour and mixing it with 1 heaped tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda and some salt.
Do you need to let Irish soda bread rise?
No, Irish soda bread does not require rising time like yeast breads. The baking soda reacts with the buttermilk immediately upon mixing, so itâs best to bake the dough right after shaping it to ensure maximum leavening.
Can you freeze Irish soda bread?
Yes, you can freeze Irish soda bread. Itâs best to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or foil and then place it in an airtight container or freezer bag. It can be frozen for up to three months. To enjoy, simply thaw at room temperature and reheat if desired.
What can I serve with Irish soda bread?
Irish soda bread pairs well with a variety of dishes. Itâs delicious served with butter and jam, alongside soups and stews, or as part of a traditional Irish breakfast with eggs and bacon. You can watch how I make this recipe over on TikTok:
