Who doesn’t love steak and chips? The only thing I can’t be bothered with is peeling and chopping potatoes and that’s why I use Mash Direct skinny chips. Such a great fakeaway.

What is air fryer peppercorn steak?

Air Fryer Peppercorn Steak is a quick and easy fakeaway version of the classic steak dinner. Using an air fryer, you can cook juicy rump steaks and crispy skinny chips with minimal fuss. The dish is topped with a creamy peppercorn sauce, giving you that restaurant-style flavour at home.

 

 

Can you cook steak in an air fryer?

Yes of course. But for this recipe, I used the air fryer to cook the chips and cooked the steak on the pan.

 

 

What is the best cut of steak for this recipe?

Lean cuts like rump steak or sirloin work best. They cook quickly in the air fryer (and pan) and stay tender. Avoid very thick or fatty cuts, as they may need longer cooking times.

 

 

How do you make peppercorn sauce?

To make a creamy peppercorn sauce, sauté butter, onion, and garlic, then add crushed whole peppercorns, cracked black pepper, milk, bistro gravy powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Simmer until thickened and smooth. It’s perfect for drizzling over your air fryer steak.

 

 

Can this recipe be made for a fakeaway night?

Absolutely. This dish is designed as a fakeaway, giving you restaurant-quality steak and chips at home with minimal prep. Using Mash Direct Skinny Chips and the air fryer cuts down on cooking time and cleanup.

 

 

Can you make this recipe healthier?

Use lean steaks, minimal butter, and air fryer chips for a lower-fat fakeaway. You can also swap full-fat milk for semi-skimmed or plant-based milk in the peppercorn sauce without losing flavour.

 

 

Can this recipe be made ahead?

The steak is best cooked fresh for optimal juiciness. However, the peppercorn sauce can be prepared in advance and reheated gently on the stove before serving.

Method

Step 1

Rub the steaks with a little olive oil and season well with salt and pepper. Set aside at room temperature. 

Step 2

Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat and add 1 tbsp butter. Add 1 garlic clove and a sprig of rosemary. Add the steaks to the pan. Cook for around 3 minutes on each side (for medium-rare), spooning the melted butter over the steaks regularly as they cook. Remove the steaks from the pan and leave to rest. 

Step 3

For the peppercorn sauce, add 1 tbsp of butter to a pan over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until softened. Stir in the garlic, whole peppercorns, salt, pepper, gravy powder, Worcestershire sauce and milk. Mix well and simmer gently until the sauce thickens and becomes smooth and creamy. 

Step 4

While the sauce is simmering, cook the @mashdirect skinny chips in the airfryer at 200°C for 12 minutes, shaking halfway through. 

Step 5

Slice the steak and serve with the chips. Spoon over the peppercorn sauce and finish with crispy onions and fresh parsley. 

Ingredients

Mash Direct Skinny Chips

2 lean rump steaks 

Salt & pepper 

2 tsp olive oil 

1 tbsp butter 

1 garlic clove 

1 sprig of rosemary 

For the sauce:  

1 tbsp butter  

1/2 onion, finely diced  

1 garlic clove, diced 

1 heaped tbsp whole peppercorns 

Generous serving of cracked pepper 

350ml of milk 

2 tbsp of bistro gravy powder 

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 

Serve with crispy onions and fresh parsley
