Ham and cheese toasties, or croques – whatever you want to call it, this is probably one of the laziest ways you can make a croque but we move. I usually decide to do 3 layers and add some tomatoes but you can do two layers to bring the calories down if required. Can’t recommend enough. For the white sauce I just used shop bought Dolmio Bechamel, the definition of lazy but perfect if you can’t be bothered making one. Choosing the Right Bread

For the best results, opt for large, thick slices of soft white bread. This type crisps up beautifully in the air fryer, creating a satisfying crunch. While sourdough can also be used, it tends to come out quite crunchy.

Selecting Your Ham

I recommend using pre-sliced ham for convenience. However, feel free to use leftover cooked ham and slice it thinly yourself for a fresher taste. For an extra kick, consider using honey roasted ham, which pairs wonderfully with the cheese.

What’s The Best Cheese For An Air Fryer Toastie?

In my opinion, nothing beats mature cheddar. However, alot of people opt for half red leister and half cheddar for the ultimate cheese toastie experience. It’s totally down to personal preference.

How do I prevent burning?

Keep an eye on your toastie after flipping it; ensure all filling is tucked inside to avoid any exposed cheese or ham from burning.

What if the top slice flies off?

This can happen if it’s not adequately stuck to the filling; checking after 30 seconds can help you adjust as needed. If it still doesn’t sit properly, you can place tooth picks into the bread so it stays in place. Ideally use wooden sticks that have been soaked in some water, as the wood can burn.

Can I make two at once?

Yes! If you have a double-draw air fryer, you can cook two at a time without issue. Just ensure there’s enough space between them in single-draw models to prevent sticking.
