Can you make Beijing Beef in the air fryer?

Yes! You can absolutely make Crispy Beijing Beef in the air fryer, and it’s a brilliant way to enjoy a lighter version of this Chinese-American takeaway favourite. The air fryer crisps up the beef strips beautifully with far less oil than deep frying—making it a perfect fakeaway option that doesn’t sacrifice flavour or crunch.

What is Beijing Beef?

Beijing Beef is a popular dish from American-Chinese cuisine, typically featuring crispy strips of beef tossed in a tangy, sweet, and slightly spicy sauce. The sauce usually includes garlic, ginger, soy sauce, vinegar, and sugar or honey. This fakeaway recipe made in the air fryer delivers all the iconic flavour and texture with a healthier twist.

Is air fryer Beijing Beef healthier than takeaway?

Yes, making Beijing Beef in the air fryer is much healthier than the traditional deep-fried version. You use significantly less oil, and you can control the sugar and sodium in the sauce. It’s the ideal fakeaway if you’re craving a Chinese classic but want to keep things lighter and more cost-effective.

What kind of beef is best for crispy Beijing beef?

The best cuts for crispy Beijing beef are thinly sliced flank steak, sirloin, or rump steak. These cuts stay tender but develop a great crisp when air-fried. Be sure to slice against the grain for a tender bite.

Can I make Beijing beef gluten-free?

Yes! To make gluten-free air fryer Beijing beef, use:

  • Tamari or a certified gluten-free soy sauce
  • Cornflour (naturally gluten-free) for the coating
  • Double-check that all sauces and condiments are gluten-free

You’ll still get that crispy, sticky fakeaway beef with none of the gluten.

How do I reheat crispy Beijing beef in the air fryer?

Reheat leftover Beijing beef in the air fryer at 180°C (356°F) for 4–6 minutes. This helps revive the crispy texture, especially if the sauce was kept separate. If it’s already coated in sauce, expect a slightly softer finish—but still packed with flavour.

Can I meal prep Beijing beef?

Yes, this is a great fakeaway meal to prep ahead. Cook the beef strips in the air fryer and store separately from the sauce. When ready to eat, reheat the beef in the air fryer to get it crispy again, then toss it with the freshly warmed sauce for maximum flavour and texture.

What should I serve with air fryer Beijing beef?

To complete your fakeaway Beijing beef meal, serve it with:

  • Steamed jasmine or basmati rice
  • Egg fried rice
  • Air fryer broccoli or stir-fried veg
  • Sesame noodles or lo mein

This turns your homemade air fryer crispy Beijing beef into a full-on Chinese takeaway night—without the delivery time or cost.

Method

Step 1

Coat the beef strips in cornflour. For ease, I pop the beef strips into a freezer bag or Tupperware along with the cornflour and give it a good shake to ensure the meat is evenly coated.

Step 2

Spray well and air fry the beef at 200º (390ºF) for 10-14 minutes, depending on how crispy you like it.

Step 3

Soften the onion and sugar snaps briefly on a pan, then stir in the beef and sauce until coated and the sauce has thickened. Top with chilli if you like a bit of spice. Serve, and enjoy!
